Friday Night Scores

Detroit MLK 6 Wyandotte 0
St Clair 42 Melvindale 14

Detroit Martin Luther King @ Wyandotte Roosevelt

Undefeated Wyandotte is coming off of a convincing 45-12 victory over Taylor Truman while King (9-1) defeated Detroit East English 28-20. These two teams last met in the 2011 playoffs with King winning in convincing fashion 33-0.

The Bears are led on the offensive side of the ball by QB Donovan Stewart, WR Brandon Sowards and RB D'Aries Davis. The defense which gives up a meager 14 ppg is led by LB Andrew Noles.

King, whose only loss is to state power Cass Tech in the PSL Championship game by a score of 20-14 has an outstanding defense that only gives up 8 ppg. The offense is led by QB James Speight but King's best player is RB Avonte Maddux. Maddux is an expolisive player who can win a game virtually by himself.

Tough call here and most likely the game I will be going to tonight. Both teams have very good defenses but King has the game changing player. Pick: King 20 Wyandotte 14

Melvindale @ St. Clair

Melvindale (9-2) is coming off of a 35-31 playoff victory over Milan while St. Clair (10-1) defeated Detroit Mumford 46-24. These two teams have never met.

St. Clair has a high powered offense that is averaging 49 ppg. The Saints are led by QB Jared Toby who is a huge threat to run the ball but is also capable of passing when needed. Brothers Bo and Blake Meldrum are both excellent backs that are capable of scoring every time they touch the ball.

While the defense doesn't have the gaudy numbers as the offense does the Saints are more than capable of holding opponents down if necessary. The defense is led by Stephen Foley and Larry Ochadleus.

Melvindale is looking forward to playing on the beautiful turf at East China Stadium. The fast, skilled passing game led by QB Jason Doyle. Receiver Malik Boynton is know for his acrobatic catches while RB Quincy Gibbs is enough of a threat to keep defenses honest.

Defensively, the Cardinals take a team approach. Ben Konarski is the emotional leader of a defense that has been just good enough most of the season.

Tough call here. The Saints have a very good team but the Cardinals may have an advantage playering on the field turf. Pick: St. Clair 34 Melvindale 31

Truman @ Wyandotte

Truman (8-2) is coming off of a big 36-19 redemption win over Allen Park while Wyandotte (10-0) continued their undefeated run with a 45-40 victory over Ypsi Lincoln. These two teams met in week 8 with the Bears winning 41-30.

Truman will use their punishing ground attack to try and upend the Bears which have beaten the Cougars three times in the last two seasons. Led by Devontae McGregor, Truman will use three backs out of the "T" formation.

Defensively, Truman will look to slow down a Wyandotte offense that is scoring 45 ppg. The defense is led by a host of seniors which will be looking to beat the Bears for the first time since 2007.

Wyandotte will look to continue their dominance over a Truman team that has been very good since coach Eric Stiegel took over the Cougar program. Donovan Stewart will once again lead the Bear offense that is equally effective on the ground or through the air.

Defense will be key for the Bears as well, as Truman averages just over 45 ppg. Damon Singleton and Andrew Noles lead the best defensive unit in the Downriver league.

Tough call here but the easy pick would be to go with the home team. Just a hunch but I think Truman is due. Pick: Truman 27 Wyandotte 24

Melvindale @ Milan

Milan (10-0) is coming off of a 26-14 playoff victory over Redford Thurston while Melvindale (8-2) defeated Riverview 34-17. These two teams last met in the playoffs back in 2005 with the Cardinals winning 28-25.

Milan continues to "just win" every game they play. The senior leadership and talents of QB/S Robert Kanitz and LB/FB Austin Hoover seem to will them to victory every week. The Big Reds are 20-1 over the last two seasons. Head Coach Jesse Hoskins has a knack for winning close games and getting the most out of his players.

Defensively, Milan is giving up only 13 ppg while the offense averages just over 30 ppg. The Big Reds rarely turn the ball over and that is the reason for much of their success.

Melvindale fell behind 10-0 early last week to Riverview but was able to make some solid offensive and defensive adjustments which led to the victory. Melvindale is led offensively by QB Jason Doyle. Doyle is a patient passer who will be the best passing QB that Melvindale will have seen all season. Malik Boynton is a superb receiver who will most likely give Milan fits all night.

Melvindale's active defense is surely going to create some problems for Milan. The Cardinals only give up 16 ppg and have seen just about everything coming out of the Downriver League. One thing Melvindale's defense can do is lay the wood and they will look set to the tone early in this game.

On paper this is a great matchup and looks like Melvindale could hand the Huron League Champions their first loss of the season. Most of you know I will not pick against the Big Reds they have burned me way too many times. Pick: Milan 21 Melvindale 17

Friday Night Scores

Melvindale 34 Riverview 17
Wyandotte 45 Ypsi Lincoln 40
Truman 36 Allen Park 19

Ypsi Lincoln @ Wyandotte

Wyandotte finished the regular season a perfect 9-0 with a 61-0 drubbing of winless Taylor Kennedy. Lincoln (7-2) fell to Huron League champion Milan in week nine 20-13. These two teams met two years ago in the Pre-District with Wyandotte winning 28-21.

Wyandotte is hoping to reach the double digit win plateau for the 4th consecutive season. Coach Ron Adams Bears have won or shared the league championship the last four seasons.

Offensively, Wyandotte is led by junior QB Donovan Stewart who has thrown for nearly 1,300 yards and 19 TD's. Senior wideout Brandon Sowards and sophomore Donnie Corley are his main targets. The running game is led by senior D'Aries Davis.

Defensively, the Bears are giving up only 10 ppg. The defense is led by senior LB's Andrew Noles  and Damon Singleton.

The Railsplitters out of the SEC are led by junior QB Eugene Smith. Smith is a tall imposing figure that has thrown for 1,300 yards and 17 TD's. The running game is led by junior Cam Williams who runs behind OT Devin McCallister. Juniors Lazon Hicks and KJ Osborn are the main aerial targets in the offense. Hicks stands at 6-5.

The defense for Lincoln is led by senior captains EJ Shaah and Jon Applewhite along with Brandon Moyer. This unit won't intimidate many but has been  solid all season enroute to an SEC League Championship.

This is a tough game to sort out because the Downriver League doesn't have non-league games and Lincoln is pretty darn athletic. How about we go with the same score from 2011. Pick: Wyandotte 28 Lincoln 21

Truman @ Allen Park

Truman (7-2) is coming off of a big 58-28 victory over Melvindale while Allen Park (7-2) defeated Anderson 26-19. This is a rematch of the week 6 game where the Jaguars surprised the Cougars 21-14.

Offensively, Truman is a tough team to defend as they have mutliple RB's in the T formation. Senior Devonate' McCuien is the QB for coach Eric Stiegal's ground oriented offense and has accounted for 663 yards on the ground to go along with 12 TD's.  Seniors Devonte McGregor and Clarence Massey have accounted for over 1,300 yards rushing and 26 TD's between them.

Defensively, the Cougars are a veteran group and are led by senior LB Donavin Rubens and senior DL Roderick Peterson and Tyler Matchko. McGregor and Massey both contribute on defense to give Truman a solid LB corp that only gives up 15 ppg.

Tom Hoover's Allen Park Jaguars are led by QB Nick Fulton. The senior has thrown for over 1,900 yards and 22 TD's. His main targets through the air are Ryan Oakley, Antonio Reviere and TE Jake Barann. Manny Andrade leads the rushing attack with 686 yards and 11 TD's.

The defense is led by senior LB Adam McJunkin along with seniors Cody LaButte and Richard Gamble. Junior Jared Brown anchors the Jaguar defensive line.

This is a tough game to pick. Both teams are senior laden with good coaching staffs. Normally the team that rushes for the most yards has an advantage. That is enough for me Pick: Truman 28 Allen Park 24

Riverview @ Melvindale

Riverview (7-2) is coming off of a pointless 63-0 victory over hapless Summit Academy while Melvindale (7-2) took a beating at the hands of powerful Taylor Truman 58-28. These two teams last met in 2001 when the Pirates won 38-33. These teams have met thirteen times with Riverview winning eleven including six straight over a five year period that started in 1997.

Riverview is led offensively by the RB combination of Josh Smith and Marcus Samuels. Both of them have blazing speed and have combined for 2,400 yards and 39 TD's. Junior Drew Kroll is an opportunistic QB who has thrown 7 TD passes with 4 of them going to junior wideout Nolan Glime. The Pirates have rarely turned the ball over since their week 2 meltdown against Milan when they turned it over 4 times.

Defensively, Riverview has struggled with anyone that has had a offensive pulse this year. They managed to begin and end the season with shut out victories over bad opponents but the good teams on the schedule have been able to score virtually at will on the Pirates. Senior LB Jake Walsh leads the defense in tackles while DE Jake Mazer and speedy DB Trevor Boike are solid as well.

Melvindale finished the season in three way tie for 2nd place in the Downriver League. The Cardinals opened the season with an impressive 40-13 win over 7-2 Allen Park and surprised many by giving undefeated Wyandotte their best test of the season in a 17-10 loss to the Bears.

Offensively, the Cardinals are averaging 33 ppg and are led by QB Jason Doyle who has thrown for over 1,400 yards and 19 TD's. His main targets are Malik Boynton and KC Clark. The two have combined for over 60 catches and 13 TD's through the air. Quincy Gibbs leads the running game with over 800 yards rushing and 9 TD's.

Defensively, the Cardinals give up just 16 ppg but gave up a whopping 58 points to Taylor Truman last week. The defense is led by LB and senior captain Ben Konarski along with DL Roderick Tubbs. Melvindale's overall team speed on defense may be the best that Riverview has seen all year.

This game features two of the best players in all of the Downriver area with Riverview's Smith and Melvindale's Boynton. This game could end up being a track meet with the first one to 50 winning the game. The legendary Bear Bryant was quoted a long time ago as saying that offense fills the seats while defense wins championships. This week I am going with the team that has the better defense. Pick: Melvindale 44 Riverview 42
